Manila, Philippines – Congress is making significant progress on the proposed extension of the terms of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials. The Senate recently approved Senate Bill No. 2816, which seeks to extend the current three-year term to four years. The bill was passed on January 14, 2025, and is now awaiting action from the House of Representatives.
In the lower chamber, a similar measure has advanced past the committee level. The House Committee on Local Government earlier expressed its support for the proposal, which aims to give barangay and SK officials more time to implement and sustain projects for their constituents.
Proponents of the bill argue that a four-year term will reduce the frequency of elections, thus cutting costs and ensuring continuity in local governance. Critics, however, warn that extending terms may reduce accountability if officials are not subject to elections as frequently.
Both chambers of Congress will need to reconcile their respective versions of the bill before sending it to Malacañang for the President’s approval. Once signed into law, the measure will take effect in the next barangay elections.
As of now, barangay and SK officials remain under the three-year term limit. Updates on the bill’s progress are highly anticipated as lawmakers continue to deliberate on this critical issue.
